Supporting and extending students.
Structured Literacy Approach

Structured Literacy Approach is great for supporting students who are struggling to learn to read. Whole word learning doesn't work for dyslexic students and others who have low phonological awareness and find it difficult to use orthographic mapping. This term I have been using a pre planned and structured strategy with 2 students to break down difficult, unfamiliar or irregular words in to their onset and rime or digraphs or chunks. The students can then use this to read their daily book. This has meant they have also learnt strategies for learning new words.
My next step is to use this plan further. I believe I can use this to help them learn to write more words.
I have been thinking about how to extend my higher level readers. I have been struggling to have shared reading this year. I have decided to try and use Google classroom for students to work more independently but I have found the students are still struggling with self management.
They are enjoying epic to find their own stories. We have started to focus on more book work but some students are enjoying using digital tools for story telling. I am trying to find a balance.
I think a novel study would be good. I think I will print several copies of the chapters to made it easier to ensure students are reading it and this will help them to finish the tasks. I have been surprised by how long it is taking students to read and then do the tasks. I have one very capable student who is functioning a lot higher. I have a huge range in abilities.
Manage the learning setting to ensure access to learning for all and to maximise learners’ physical, social, cultural and emotional safety.
Create an environment where learners can be confident in their identities, languages, cultures and abilities.
